It is one of the main motives of Great Synonym to add informational content to its blog posts. So that the readers who are investing their time in reading our blog post get the same value in return for what they are expecting while reading our blog posts.
Introduction to Dead Words:
In our daily lives, we use many words to convey our information or ideas to others. We can convey these ideas either by writing or speaking. In any language, words play a key role in the means of communication. Whether it is a phrase, sentence, or a complete paragraph whatever it is. It consists of many and many words. In this huge world of words, some words have lost their worth and strength over time. Actually, those words are dead words. Because these words have less impact on their listeners and readers now, that’s why these words are considered to be dead. Also, that is not the case that these words are always as dead as they are now. But somehow, they have lost the power to impact their listeners and readers’ minds.
Definition:
“Words that have lost their power of getting attracted by the audience”, are called dead words. The name of dead words reveals those words or phrases that are considered dead in language. By dead, means, they are no longer used in everyday speech. They have just lost their value among their readers and speakers. In my blog post on the beauty of language, it is mentioned that these are words or phrases in language that make it beautiful. Words add beauty to language. Also, the words that are overused in our society, become dead after some time.
Bad Impact of Dead Words:
Definitely, the use of dead words in a sentence or phrase can have a bad impact on its readers and listeners. Especially for those who choose writing as a career. Like bloggers, writers, etc. It is because their main goal is to engage their audience in valuable content not just to reflect the meaning of the content but also to present their skills as an art piece. Otherwise, the use of such words may cause harm to their content. By using these words in their writings, they don’t get such a good response as they are expecting to be. Because the use of such words does not appreciate the concept of innovation in the content.
Why should we avoid such words?
Also, It gives a rough look to their content rather than giving it a pleasant look. We all are well aware of the rule that first, “we see and then take other actions”. The same rule is applicable in this case. Adding short and more unique words to your content makes it pleasant. This is what I meant while writing “pleasing content” earlier. Writing pleasing content is always considered to be a great technique for ranking your content. Dead words can also weaken the emotional feelings of a viewer toward our content. However, it is more helpful to use such words that can enhance your audience’s interest in your content.
How to use Dead Words:
The question here arises that if we are advised to not use these words, then what are the easiest and possible solutions to get rid of those words? The answer is simple. What do we mostly do if we find out that something is not meeting the requirements in our daily lives? All we do is to replace that thing with something better. Same method we are going to apply to get rid of these dead words. All we do is search for the most suitable synonyms for that particular dead word. This will be easy. This technique of using synonyms for these words will fix our problem and also add more words to our vocabulary.
Example of Dead Words and their alternatives:
Happy:
The most known and commonly used dead words by us is happy. Happy word is mostly used to express positive emotions. The alternatives for the happy word are joyful, pleasant, delightful, cheerful, merry, etc., and many more. It’s your choice to choose an alternative.
Sad:
Another most commonly used word but still dead. Also the antonym for the previous word. The alternatives for sad words are unhappy, down, sorrowful, awful, grievous, wretched, etc., and many more. Again it is you who choose what word suits you best.
Many other words are considered dead now.
Here are a few more words that we mostly used in our writings and speeches but are dead now. These are:
VERY | THINGS | BAD | SAID | GREAT | WALK |
NICE | GOT | REALLY | FUNNY | ALWAYS | LIKE |
AMAZING | BIG | FAST | A LOT | FUN |
We know that we can use a synonym in place of the dead word. But there are also some rules we must follow while choosing a suitable synonym for the word.
First of all, don’t add synonyms just by searching, we must consider the context of our sentence. We must search for what is the most suitable synonym for our dead words in this scenario. Here is the sentence:
“I always walk a mile.”
Now, we know always and walk is our dead words here. There are many synonyms for “walk” and “always” that I get from my first search on Google. For “always” these are the Google top synonym results: “every time”, “constantly”, “consistently”, “regularly”, “repeatedly”, “invariably”, and “daily”, etc. For “walk”, I’ve shown these results: “stroll”, “saunter”, “amble”, “troop”, “march” etc. However, we have learned that we will always choose synonyms according to the requirement of the sentence. So the previous sentence would be written as:
“I invariably stroll a mile” or “I stroll a mile, daily”
